Roof Refurbishment: New Felt, Battens & Ridge Tiles | Rochester
A complete roof refurbishment by Primeline Roofing & Building, combining modern roofing materials with the careful reuse of the property’s original roof tiles.
Our team at Primeline Roofing & Building recently completed this substantial roofing project in Rochester, Kent, giving a large, traditional tiled roof a new lease of life.
Rather than replacing the entire roof covering with new tiles, the homeowner opted for a comprehensive roof refurbishment that would retain the property’s original character while upgrading the essential components beneath the tiles.
The project involved stripping back the existing roof covering, installing new roofing felt and treated timber battens, carefully reinstating the original tiles, replacing any damaged or broken tiles, and fitting brand-new ridge and hip tiles. We also applied a specialist acid-based treatment to the existing roof tiles as part of the refurbishment.
The result is a thoroughly refurbished roof that retains its traditional appearance while benefiting from a renewed underlay and batten system.
Stripping Back the Existing Roof
With a roof of this size and design, careful preparation was essential.
We began by erecting scaffolding around the property, providing safe access to the roof and allowing our team to work across its multiple slopes, hips and ridge sections.
The existing roof tiles were carefully removed in stages, exposing the original timber battens and underlying roof structure.
As the tiles were being reused, particular care was taken during removal and handling to preserve as many of the original tiles as possible.
This approach allowed us to retain the traditional appearance of the roof while carrying out the necessary improvements underneath.
Installing New Roofing Felt and Timber Battens
Once the existing tiles and old battens had been removed, we could begin renewing the roof’s underlying protection.
We installed a new breathable roofing membrane across the roof slopes, providing an additional protective layer beneath the tiles.
This membrane helps manage moisture and provides secondary protection against wind-driven rain that may penetrate the outer roof covering.
New treated timber roofing battens were then installed over the membrane, creating a secure framework for fixing the roof tiles.
The battens were carefully positioned and spaced to accommodate the original tiles, ensuring the existing roof covering could be reinstated correctly.
This stage is particularly important because, although roof tiles provide the primary defence against the weather, the membrane and battens beneath them are essential components of a properly functioning pitched roof.
By renewing these elements, we were able to significantly improve the roof’s underlying construction without unnecessarily replacing the entire tiled covering.
Reusing the Original Roof Tiles
One of the main objectives of this project was to preserve the property’s existing roof tiles wherever possible.
The original tiles had developed a naturally weathered appearance over the years, giving the property its distinctive character.
Rather than discarding serviceable tiles and installing a completely new covering, our team carefully reinstated the original tiles onto the new battens.
Any tiles that were cracked, broken or unsuitable for reuse were replaced to ensure the roof covering remained complete and properly protected.
Reusing the existing tiles also helped reduce unnecessary material waste while maintaining the familiar appearance of the property.
This was an excellent example of how a major roof refurbishment can provide substantial improvements without requiring a completely new set of roof tiles.
New Ridge and Hip Tiles
With the main roof covering reinstated, our attention turned to the ridge and hip sections.
These areas are particularly important on a hipped roof, where several roof slopes meet and require secure, weather-resistant junctions.
We installed brand-new ridge and hip tiles, giving these prominent sections a fresh, uniform finish.
The new tiles complement the existing roof covering while providing renewed protection along the roof’s highest and most exposed junctions.
The contrast between the original weathered tiles and the new ridge and hip tiles also provides a neat, distinctive finish.
Specialist Treatment to the Existing Roof Tiles
As part of the refurbishment, we also applied a specialist acid-based treatment to the existing roof tiles.
Over time, roof tiles can accumulate surface deposits, staining and organic growth due to prolonged exposure to the British weather.
The treatment was applied as part of the roof maintenance and refurbishment process, helping address surface contamination on the original tiles.
This additional work complemented the main roofing improvements and helped complete the overall refurbishment.
A Refurbished Roof Built for the Years Ahead
This was a sizeable roofing project requiring careful planning, skilled workmanship and attention to detail throughout.
From stripping the existing roof and installing the new breathable membrane and timber battens to reinstating the original tiles and fitting the new ridge and hip tiles, every stage was carried out with the aim of improving the roof’s performance while preserving its traditional appearance.
The finished roof now benefits from renewed underlying materials, replacement tiles where required, and new ridge and hip coverings.
Most importantly, the property has retained the character of its original roof without the additional expense and waste associated with replacing every tile.
We’re delighted with how this project has come together and proud to have delivered another substantial roofing refurbishment in Rochester, Kent.
