Ridge tiles sit along the highest point of a pitched roof, covering the joint where two roof slopes meet. They help protect the roof from wind and rain while also providing a neat, finished appearance.

Traditionally, ridge tiles have been secured using mortar. Many modern roofs now use a dry ridge system instead.

Both methods can provide effective protection when installed correctly, but there are important differences in how they perform, how they are maintained and how long they are likely to remain secure.

What Are Traditional Mortar Ridge Tiles?

A traditional ridge installation uses a sand and cement mortar mix to bed the ridge tiles into position.

The mortar fills the gaps beneath and between the tiles, creating a solid finish along the top of the roof. This method has been widely used across the UK for generations and is still found on many older homes.

When the mortar is mixed and applied correctly, it can provide a strong and attractive finish. However, it is exposed to changing weather conditions throughout the year.

Repeated cycles of rain, frost, heat and movement can eventually cause the mortar to crack or loosen.

What Is a Dry Ridge System?

A dry ridge system secures the ridge tiles mechanically rather than relying on mortar.

The system normally uses a ventilated ridge roll, fixing screws, clamps and brackets. Each ridge tile is securely attached to the roof structure.

Because the tiles are mechanically fixed, the installation is less dependent on mortar remaining intact.

Dry ridge systems are widely used on new roofs, roof replacements and renovation projects.

Weather Resistance

One of the main differences between the two systems is how they respond to weather and movement.

No roofing system is completely maintenance-free, but dry ridge can reduce the likelihood of recurring mortar repairs.

The ventilated ridge roll allows air to move through the roof space while helping to keep out rain, insects and debris. Good ventilation can reduce the risk of condensation building up inside the loft.

Installation Conditions

Mortar work can be affected by weather conditions. Very wet, cold or hot weather can make installation more difficult and may affect how the mortar cures.

A dry ridge system does not need time to set and can often be installed in a wider range of conditions. This can make the process quicker and more predictable.

However, installation should still be carried out by an experienced roofing contractor. The ridge roll, battens and fixings must all be fitted correctly to create a secure and weather-resistant result.

How Long Do the Systems Last?

The lifespan of a mortar ridge depends on the quality of the materials, installation standard, roof movement and local weather exposure.

Well-installed mortar can last for many years, but it will usually require some maintenance during the life of the roof.

A properly fitted dry ridge system is designed to provide a long-lasting mechanical connection. Because it does not depend on exposed mortar, there are fewer opportunities for cracking and crumbling to affect the ridge.

Individual components can also be replaced if they become damaged.

Can Mortar Ridge Tiles Be Converted to Dry Ridge?

In many cases, existing mortar-bedded ridge tiles can be converted to a dry ridge system.

The old ridge tiles are carefully removed, and the failing mortar is cleared away. Suitable battens and a ridge roll are then installed before the tiles are mechanically fixed back into position.

The original ridge tiles may sometimes be reused if they are still in good condition. Damaged or badly weathered tiles should be replaced.

A roof inspection is needed to confirm whether conversion is suitable and whether any additional repairs are required.
